Portugal is the fourth country to receive the HeatSticks.Law is silent on whether or not people can smoke in public spaces.Tabaqueira has just launched a new tobacco category, HeatSticks, marketed under the Marlboro brand.Portugal is the fourth market to receive this new product from Philip Morris International.HeatSticks will not be for sale in tobacconists, having its own sales and distribution system. The opening of the iQOS Club, in Chiado, is scheduled for January. The sale is limited to Greater Lisbon. The company did not advance dates for a national expansion. The HeatSticks arrive in Portugal a year after their launch in Japan, followed by Italy and Switzerland. The heated tobacco, the new bet of Phillip Morris, the owner of Tobacco, is neither a combustion cigarette nor an electronic cigarette (aka steam), although it can only be used through an electronic device: the iQOS.This heats up the HeatStick, which releases an aerosol but does not burn. That is, it does not produce ash or smoke and the smell released quickly dissipates. But what is heated is, effectively, tobacco created for the purpose - with several blends - and not a liquid solution with nicotine, as in electronic cigarettes.Tobaqueira positions Heat-Sticks as an alternative to the consumption of combustion tobacco for adult smokers, but with less associated risks, as there is no smoke, responsible for a large part of the harmful effects of tobacco. The extent of this reduction is still being studied. The new category of tobacco is provided for in new legislation that takes effect in January, but this is silent on whether or not you can smoke in public places. The HeatSticks will be marketed under the Marlboro brand, which is the most sold worldwide, and there are currently three options on the market: more intense, less intense and menthol. Each pack, with 20 units, costs 4.70 euros. For the sale of this new product, Tabaqueira is creating a new distribution system. In other words, you won't find it in tobacconists or tobacco machines.Subscribe to our newsletter and have the news in your email every dayAt this time, iOQS devices can only be purchased online via the iQOnnet referencing system. In other words, one of the 900 participants in the pilot test created by Tabaqueira will have to invite him and register on the website (www.iQOS.pt) to obtain a code that gives him access to the shopping area.On the website, you can choose to buy a kit - consisting of the device, a pocket charger, a plug adapter and USB cable, as well as a cleaning kit -, which costs 70 euros, or the equipment separately, but in this case, for example, the device alone costs 40 euros. To buy packs of Heat-Sticks you have to place an order online or over the phone.Delivery will be made by Tabaqueira's logistics partner after confirmation of the client's majority.Ordering requires a minimum of ten packs. The sale is limited to Greater Lisbon. In January, Tabaqueira wants to open a store in the Chiado area. With two floors, the space on Rua da Misericórdia will allow not only the purchase of equipment and accessories (such as protective covers for pocket chargers) but also HeatSticks packs.Tabaqueira does not advance dates for a national expansion of the sale of this product or market share targets. But this is a product that Phillip Morris, which ended 2014 with 15.6% of the world cigarette market outside the US, has been betting.Since 2008 it has invested two billion euros in the development of what it calls reduced risk products, which include heated tobacco. And within 5 to 10 years, it wants to transform 10% to 15% of its portfolio into low-risk products.
